Tips for squirrel removal in Hamilton

close up of squirrel before squirrel removal in HamiltonSquirrels can cause extensive damage by chewing electrical wires and boards if they get into your home. This problem becomes worse when adult females build nests in the attic. Some signs that give away their existence in the attic include sound of scampering as they run in and out of the attic during the day. Also, consistent scratching noises can be heard if squirrels fall into wall cavities and are unable to climb out.

The following general steps can be taken to avoid or possibly remove squirrels from your home:

  1. The first step is to find the entry point that squirrels may be using. It is crucial that all entry points are identified. Spots such as vents, eaves and roof can be inspected for this purpose.
  2. The second step is to relocate the adult female’s nest, which will most likely be made of pieces of insulation, cardboard or leaves. It is important to note that from February through May or August through October, babies are always present. It is advised that they be left alone for a few additional weeks as the babies will not be able to relocate and not survive without the mother.
  3. The next step is to make a decision whether to wait for a few weeks to give the babies time to grow or have the squirrels removed sooner. If the squirrels need to be removed immediately, a professional should be hired as they are trained to reunite the mothers and their offspring. In the case where no baby squirrels are found, several methods can be used to remove adult squirrels. Simple tactics such as banging on the rafters, putting a radio on, lighting up the area or putting rags that are soaked in cider vinegar in the attic.  Alternatively, waiting for all the squirrels to leave during the day and sealing the entry points may be appropriate.
  4. The final step is to make sure that squirrels stay out. This can be done by reinforcing all the weak points around the attic and installing metal flashing.

Two important points that should be taken into account: Squirrels may have damaged electrical wiring and it is advised an electrician inspects the area after the animals have been removed.  Also, it is crucial that professionals are hired when there are babies in the nest as evicting them can be difficult. Professionals have the best training and means to humanely remove squirrels and other pests from your home.
